Cataract Surgery

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens that is caused by a variety of factors including age, genetics, medication, and eye trauma. The cloudy lens impairs a person’s vision causing blurriness, halos, and loss of depth perception. Though prescription glasses can help with vision problems associated with cataracts, cataracts can also be treated through a safe, outpatient surgical procedure.

During cataract surgery, the affected lens is removed through a microincision. A lens implant is then used to replace the cloudy lens in order to restore the patient’s vision. The lens will allow the patient to focus on both distant or nearby objects, reducing or eliminating the need for prescription glasses following cataract surgery.

Corneal Transplant Surgery

The cornea is the curved, transparent, protective layer covering the front of the eye. In conjunction with the lens, the cornea helps the eye to focus by refracting light. Injuries, infection, and diseases that affect the cornea can cause irreversible damage. Some people may complain of discomfort associated with the swelling or thinning of their cornea, cloudiness, reduced vision, or even blindness.

These conditions can be treated through a corneal transplant surgery. Approximately 40,000 corneal transplant surgeries are performed in the United States each year and the procedure has one of the highest success rates of all tissue and organ transplant surgeries currently performed. At Empire Eye and Laser Center, we will walk you through each step of the procedure so you are fully aware of what to expect before, during, and after a corneal transplant.

Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is caused by excessive pressure on or damage to the optic nerve. A degenerative eye disease, glaucoma can lead to total vision loss if not treated. An estimated 3 million Americans suffer from glaucoma, but because the disease has no early warning signs, only half of these people are aware they have it. Approximately 5,000 people will go blind as a result of the disease.

While eye drops and intravenous medications that reduce eye pressure may be prescribed to certain patients, other patients will require a surgical procedure for effective treatment of glaucoma. Laser eye surgery may be used to help reduce the pressure in the eye or traditional, highly successful surgical treatments such as a trabeculectomy or a valve implantation may be employed. The doctors of Empire Eye and Laser Center will determine what treatment option is best for you.

Ocular Surface Reconstruction

A wide variety of factors can negatively impact the surface of the eyes, compromising our vision, our comfort, and our ability to combat infection. Eye diseases may cause blurry vision, loss of vision, ocular surface scarring, and other uncomfortable forms of eye damage. Non-disease related eye injuries could similarly cause damage to the ocular surface and affect one’s ability to see. Using a wide array of techniques and treatments such as medication, surgery, and transplantation, Empire Eye and Laser Center can rebuild or restore the eye’s surface. We can improve a patient’s vision and restore both the function and appearance of the surface of the eye.
